Olympics swimming: Great Britain’s Freya Colbert & Katie Shanahan progress to medley final

Great Britain’s Freya Colbert and Katie Shanahan have both qualified for the final of the women’s 400m individual medley.

Backed by a vocal GB support, Colbert was third fastest in the first heat as she chased home the USA’s Emma Weyant and Katie Grimes.

Shanahan was fourth but faced a nervous wait to see if she had made the final.

Canada’s 17-year-old star Summer McIntosh dominated the second heat and Shanahan’s time was good enough to sneak into the final in eighth place overall.

Ireland’s Ellen Walshe went from seventh to fourth in the final leg of the second heat to reach the final.

In the 100m backstroke, GB’s Kathleen Dawson and Medi Harris both narrowly missed out on progressing to the semi-finals.

Danielle Hill, from Northern Ireland, pipped the GB duo in the first heat to secure the 16th and final spot in the semi-finals.

After Adam Peaty’s silver medal on Sunday, there are four gold medals up for grabs for Team GB in the pool on Monday evening.

Colbert and Shanahan return to the La Defense Arena for their medley final at 19:30 BST.

Duncan Scott and Matthew Richards race in the men’s 200m freestyle final at 19:40.

Oliver Morgan will compete in the men’s 100m backstroke final at 20:20, before Angharad Evans rounds out the medal hopes in the women’s 100m breaststroke final.
