Great Britain’s Emma Finucane powered into the women’s keirin quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics, but GB missed out on the gold medal race in the team pursuit.

GB’s team pursuit quartet of Elinor Barker, Josie Knight, Anna Morris and Jessica Roberts were beaten by the USA in the semi-finals.

They will face Italy for bronze on Wednesday evening, with USA and New Zealand going for gold.

GB’s Katy Marchant needed the repechage round to reach the quarters.

Marchant came third in her heat behind New Zealand’s Ellesse Andrews and France’s Mathilde Gros after a photo finish. However, she was second in her repechage heat to join Finucane in the quarters.

The men’s sprint session saw GB’s Jack Carlin and Hamish Turnbull both advance into the last 16 and the world record broken twice.

Carlin came fifth in the first qualifying session with a time of 9.247 and Turnbull was seventh with a time of 9.346.

Australia’s Matthew Richardson set a new world record with a time of 9.091, only to see Dutch star Harrie Lavreysen break it on the final run as he raced round in 9.088.

Carlin, Turnbull, Richardson and Lavreysen all then won their head-to-head sprints to reach the last 16, but Turnbull will have to contest the repechage stage if he wants to reach the quarter-finals, having lost his encounter with Mohd Awang.

Carlin started and finished ahead of Cristian Ortega Fontalvo to book his place in the quarters.
