Men’s B 4000m individual pursuit – final

World silver medallists Steve Bate and Chris Latham will attempt to go one better shortly.

These two compete together on a tandem bike, with Bate, 47, visually impaired and Latham, 30, competing as his sighted pilot.

In 2011, Bate, from Moray in Scotland, was diagnosed with a rare eye disorder and has now lost most of his vision.

Two years after his diagnosis, he became the first visually-impaired person to climb El Capitan in California.

He then set his sights on para-cycling and the 2016 Games in Rio. Assisted by pilot Adam Duggleby, he won two golds and a bronze.

At the Tokyo Games in this event, the pair had to settle for silver, missing out on gold to Tristan Bangma and Patrick Bos of the Netherlands.

Accepting this will likely be his last Paralympics, Bate wants to go out on a high with his new sighted pilot.
