Tube and Overground lines suspended after ‘leaf fall’ and flooding

A wave of disruption has paralysed part of the London Underground today after flooding, fire alerts and ‘significant leaf fall.’

The Piccadilly line is suspended between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge due to poor rail conditions caused by ‘significant leaf fall,’ TfL said. The Mildmay Overground line has no service between Willesden junction and Clapham junction and between Stratford and Richmond after flooding and a customer incident.

Earlier, High Street Kensington station was evacuated due to a trackside fire and King’s Cross station was emptied after an alert. The Elizabeth line has reopened after signalling issues since yesterday, but travel might still be disrupted until 3pm as service recovers.

Meanwhile, the third storm of the season, Storm Conall, has brought travel disruption on rail and roads in London and the South East after Storm Bert’s chaos. Scroll down to see all the affected railway lines.

Points failure causes train delays at Liverpool Street

A points failure at London Liverpool Street station means Greater Anglia, Overground and Stansted Express services could be cancelled or delayed.

National Rail said the issue could be resolved by 3.15pm.

Journeys could take longer than usual or be axed on the following routes.

  • Greater Anglia between London Liverpool Street and Hertford East / Stansted Airport / Cambridge North / Ely / Braintree / Colchester Town / Clacton-on-Sea / Southend Victoria / Ipswich / Norwich
  • London Overground between London Liverpool Street and Chingford / Enfield Town / Cheshunt
  • Stansted Express between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport

Roads closed in West Sussex after flooding

Several roads have been flooded in West Sussex around Crawley, including next to London Gatwick Airport – just some of the dozens of areas across England and Wales affected by Storm Bert and Storm Conall.

Here are some of the blocked roads.

  • Lowfield Heath Road outside Gatwick Airport is closed both ways due to flooding
  • Selsfield Road in Selsfield Common is blocked in both directions from B2028 Ardingly Road to Vowels Lane after becoming submerged
  • Cob Lane is closed Northbound from B2028 Ardingly Road to Philpots Cottages
  • B2115 Warninglid Lane is closed in both directions due to impassable flooding
  • B2237 Worthing Road is closed in both directions due to flooding between The Boars Head to Hop Oast Park and Ride Roundabout

Severe delays after M1 crash traps person in lorry

Traffic is backed up after a crash closed three southbound lanes on the M1 between J21A and J21 just southwest of Leicester.

Drivers face 90-minute delays with traffic ground to a halt as far as J22 near Markfield while emergency services clear the scene.

National Highways said: ‘At this time Leicestershire Fire Service have instructed us to keep traffic held at scene due a person trapped inside one of the lorries. Injuries are not reported as serious.

‘Please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.’

Lines reopen after flooding between Ascot and Aldershot

Railway lines have reopened after heavy rain shut the tracks at Bagshot, Surrey, earlier today.

But South Western Railway trains will take some time to recover so trains between Ascot and Aldershot may still be cancelled and revised until about 1pm.

Tube status update after fire alerts

Passengers will struggle to find a Tube line that is not affected by any disruption after a wave of fire alerts, Elizabeth line suspension and leaves on tracks.

  • Bakerloo line – Severe delays after the earlier fire alert
  • Circle line – Severe delays remain after the trackside fire at High Street Kensington
  • Elizabeth line – No service between Paddington and Abbey Wood, and severe delays between Paddington, Heathrow Airport and Reading
  • Hammersmith & City line – Severe delays due to the earlier fire
  • Northern line – Severe delays due to a fire alert at Clapham North
  • Piccadilly line – No service between Rayners Lane and Uxbridge due to poor rail conditions after significant leaf fall
  • Central line – Minor delays Leytonstone and Hainault via Newbury Park due to train cancellations

Motorists have been warned of long delays on the M25 in Surrey after surface water on the motorway.

Heavy rain brought by Storm Conall means excess water has built on the carriageway clockwise between J9 and J12.

The speed limit has been reduced to 40mph.

Services resume at King’s Cross station after fire alert

Services have resumed at King’s Cross Underground station after an earlier fire alert.

Metro understands the station was evacuated as standard practice after the fire alert before the London Fire Brigade gave the station an all-clear.

Footage showed passengers queueing at the Paddington Tube station entrance with police officers guarding the stairs which appeared blocked off.

The third storm of the season, Storm Conall, has already made itself known after heavy rain and further flooding.

Long delays on the M25 at Dartford Crossing

Drivers have been warned of traffic delays on the A206 and M25 after a stalled vehicle blocked part of a lane anticlockwise at J1a (Dartford Tunnel).

Traffic congestion is backing up to J3 M20 Swanley Interchange and the A2 near the Bluewater shopping centre.

‘Do not travel’ warning issued on London trains

National Rail has issued a ‘do not travel’ warning due to multiple incidents between London Blackfriars and London St Pancras International and at East Croydon.

Trains face up to 60-minute delays across Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Southern services.

National Rail said: ‘We strongly advise you delay travelling until later this morning. There will be heavy disruption for trains in and out of central London, and your journey could take up to an hour longer than usual.

‘Trains that normally run between St Albans and Sutton will only run between St Albans and Kentish Town. There is no Thameslink service between London Blackfriars and Sutton.

‘There will be a reduced service between Bedford and Three Bridges, in both directions. Please check station screens and planners for the latest information.

‘The Gatwick Express service is suspended.

‘Direct services between Reigate and London Victoria are suspended. Please note that GWR services are suspended on the route between Reigate and Gatwick.’

The disruption is expected to last until 12pm.

King’s Cross evacuated after fire alert

King’s Cross station has been evacuated after a fire alert and to avoid overcrowding after to severe issues across the TfL network.

The station entrances have been cordoned off after the fire alarm went off.

Bakerloo line has severe delays because of the alarm.

A TfL alert said the King’s Cross station is closed to ‘prevent overcrowding.’

More travel chaos at Liverpool Street after Elizabeth line issues

All Elizabeth line trains at the UK’s busiest train station have been delayed or cancelled since yesterday after a signalling system failure.

Huge crowds were pictured moving through the station as ‘one man’ was reportedly directing the horde of people.

One passenger told Metro a staff member was instructing people on the platform ‘very helpfully’ and telling them what to do.

The passenger praised the staff member named Monty for helping people ‘to get to their destinations.’

TfL update after trackside fire

Transport for London has commented on the fire which forced the evacuation of High Street Kensington station.

TfL told Metro it was a ‘small fire’ which was extinguished by London Fire Brigade and TfL is now working to fix the problem.

There is no service between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road currently, while severe delays persist between Earl’s Court and Barking eastbound only.

Delays on M27 near Southampton after flooding

One lane has closed on the M27 outside Southampton after flooding on the motorway.

The flooded spot has closed the exit ramp eastbound at junction J3 (Southampton Dock).

Traffic is queueing in the area on the eastbound carriageway.

The District and Circle lines on the London Underground have been suspended after reports of a fire on the track near High Street Kensington.

  • Circle line – No service on the entire line
  • District line – Part suspended between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road, and severe delays between Earl’s Court and Barking eastbound only due to a fire alert in Kensington

Passengers have been caught in travel mayhem on the Tube this morning after reports of a fire on the track near High Street Kensington station.

The fire service is on the scene at High Street Kensington station where passengers were not allowed into the station.

An eyewitness said a driver told them the track just before High Street Kensington caught fire and a train driver tried to tackle it.

Circle line trains are now being terminated at South Kensington station.

Some passengers opted for a bus to try High Street Kensington from Victoria. They said services were full to the brim at London Victoria station.

One eyewitness told Metro they were unable to board two route 52 buses as they were ‘so full I couldn’t get on.’

She said when the third bus showed the driver ‘yelled to the crowd to take taxis.’ In the end, she was forced to return home instead of going to the office. Another passenger said the bus 52 journey took her ‘nearly twice as long as usual.’

We approached the London Fire Brigade for a comment.

Tree and flooding block railway lines in Hampshire

South Western Railway passengers face disruption after a fallen tree and flooding on tracks at Romsey.

With all the lines blocked, trains could be cancelled, delayed or revised.

SWR said passengers can use tickets free of charge on Bluestar routes 4 and 5 and Salisbury Reds routes X7 and 37.

The morning commute is off to a sticky start for passengers waking up to heavy rain and Tube delays.

Here is a recap of what travel on the London Underground looks like at rush hour.

  • Circle line – Severe delays due to power supply issues
  • Elizabeth line – A stretch between Paddington station and Abbey Wood continues to be suspended while it also has severe delays between Paddington, Heathrow Airport and Reading
  • Hammersmith & City – Severe delays because of the power supply problem
  • Metropolitan line – Minor delays Harrow-on-the-Hill and Amersham due to train cancellations while the rest of the line has good service

40-minute delays on trains through Guildford

Passengers travelling to Gatwick Airport should prepare for significant delays after heavy rain has flooded the track between Guildford and Ash.

As a result, the Guildford to Farnham services will be cancelled in both directions.

National Rail said: ‘This means that trains running between Guildford and Wokingham / Farnham may be cancelled, delayed by up to 40 minutes or revised.

‘It is expected that this issue will continue to impact services until 14:00.’

A shuttle train service operates between Reading and Ash, while taxis operate between Ash and Guildford.

Here are the affected routes.

  • Great Western Railway between Gatwick Airport / Redhill and Reading
  • South Western Railway between Guildford and Farnham

Disruption on trains in the Southampton area

A fallen tree and flooding continues to block railway lines in the Southampton area, causing cancellations on Great Western Railway and South Western Railway services.

National Rail said it expects trains to be affected until 3pm.

  • The line between Salisbury and Romsey is blocked until specialist teams are able to remove a fallen tree
  • Trains have to run at a reduced speed on all lines through St Denys due to heavy flooding between Eastleigh and Botley
  • Services through Eastleigh are disrupted due to heavy rain and flooding and a fault with the signalling system
