Canary Islands ‘most remote hidden gem’ with ‘crystal-clear waters’

El Hierro is the second smallest of the  with a population of approximately 11,150 and has been described by the local tourism board as the “most remote” of all the islands. Whether you’re looking to escape the hubbub of the main island or want to soak up nature in its rawest form, El Hierro is a must-visit destination.

The island experiences fewer visitors than some of the bigger and more popular Canary Islands, though it can be reached by both ferry and plane.

The only ferry route to El Hierro is from the port of Los Cristianos in Tenerife. The ferry takes approximately two and a half hours. Alternatively, the airport near Valverde is connected by plane to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

However, the journey is well worth it. The Canary Islands tourism board said: “El Hierro, the smallest and most remote of the Canary Islands, boasts natural beauty and ecological diversity.

“This UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts, offering volcanic landscapes, crystal-clear waters, and incredible underwater ecosystems. From diving in La Restinga Marine Reserve to stargazing at the renowned Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, El Hierro promises endless adventures.”

The clear surrounding El Hierro make it a divers paradise, where an array of fish and rays can be spotted. The area of Punta Restinga located opposite the fishing harbour of the town of La Restinga is one of the main diving hubs on the island.

By day divers can see spiny puffer fish as well as many small fish typical of the area such as whitebait, damselfish, lee fish and bream and possibly a manta ray. At night stingrays and lobsters can be seen.

Back on land, the island is known for its unusual rock formations and deep black sand. El Hierro also offers plenty of opportunities for outdoorsy adventure seekers, including hiking, cycling and birdwatching.

Summer is the busiest time on the island, so if you are really looking to escape the crowds while still enjoying glorious weather, spring is a great time to visit.

If you’re looking to stay for a few days, the island is home to a modest selection of boutique hotels. El Hotel Balneario Pozo de la Salud is a spa hotel which sits atop the rugged cliffs, offering stunning views of the water below.

The hotel has just 22 rooms, perfect for a quiet stay. As well as its thermal waters and spa facilities, one of the hotels main attractions is star-gazing. Given the lack of light pollution in the surrounding area, guests can step outside and look up for a dazzling display.
