Chelsea’s hopes of winning the Premier League may not be high, but they are top of another table… their fans are the biggest Donald Trump supporters in Britain.
A whopping 50 per cent of Blues fans would vote Trump if they had a vote in the next month’s US presidential election, according to a poll for Betfair.
This puts them well ahead of their Premier League rivals – and they are the only club whose support for the Republican candidate outscores out scores that for his Democrat rival Kamala Harris.
Coming second are Manchester City fans, with 40 per cent supporting Trump, though 47 per cent would support Kamala Harris, according to the survey of more than 2,000 Brits.
Third in the table are Newcastle supporters, with 35 per cent backing Trump, and making up the top four is Arsenal, at 33 per cent. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Liverpool complete the top seven.
Liverpool fans back Harris at a whopping 60 per cent, more than double the 26 per cent of fans who would vote for Trump.
Looking at all the Premier League football fans surveyed, the majority would vote for Harris (56 per cent), while almost a third would vote for Trump (29 per cent).
On the whole, the Betfair research conducted by YouGov has revealed that if people in Britain were given a vote in next month’s US Election, as many as one in five would choose Donald Trump.
While support for Trump in the UK has almost doubled from 12% to 22% in the four years since Betfair last ran the survey, Kamala Harris would still win by a landslide, with 60% of Brits saying they would vote for her.
Support for the Vice President is significantly up on the 47% of people that said they would vote for Joe Biden if given the chance four years ago.
Betfair spokesperson, Sam Rosbottom said: “The race to the White House is heating up, and with less than a month to go it is capturing the world’s attention.
“While some people say politics and sport don’t mix, the US election is an event that has people talking everywhere, from the water cooler in the office to the terraces up and down the country.
“If the UK was the 51st state and Brits had a vote, it’s clear that it would be a Kamala Harris landslide, however Chelsea fans would choose Trump over the Vice-President. The London club tops the table of Premier League fans who are most pro-Trump.
“So far more than £135m has been wagered on the US Election markets, with the betting incredibly tight with each candidate trading places to become the favourite over the last few weeks.
“Four years ago, the Betfair Exchange next President market broke all records to become the world’s biggest ever betting event, with £1.7bn staked on Trump v Biden.”
