Final Olympic Qualifier: In form China to join Chinese Taipei, Great Britain and Malaysia in Paris

Final Olympic Qualifier: In form China to join Chinese Taipei, Great Britain and Malaysia in Paris

“We didn’t set the bar too high but honestly, we didn’t expect to get into the Olympics,” she said. “We’ve trained for this moment, and we’ve given our best.”

Following Chinese Taipei’s 5-1 victory over Ukraine, it was set for all 12 quotas to head to Asia, but Great Britain had other ideas.

Despite having performed below par throughout the match, even shooting low for seven on a couple of occasions, Birmingham 2022 World Games silver medallist Bryony Pitman shot a 10 when needed in the final end pipping Great Britain over Japan, making it 57-56 in the fourth set, 6-2 in set points.

Overwhelmed with emotion, a teary Pitman admitted she thought she had cost her nation the valuable quotas at one point.

“It feels amazing. I think I was very lucky in the first couple of sets. These two (Penny Healey, Megan Havers) shot so well and they didn’t make those mistakes.

“I’m glad I shot a 10 when it mattered and when we needed it. I’m over the moon.”

After today’s results, China and Chinese Taipei have four Olympic quotas each (both 1 man, 3 women) whereas Great Britain and Malaysia hold three (both 3 women).

Three Olympic quotas will also be up for grabs tomorrow in the recurve men’s team event meaning whoever finishes on the podium will book their nation further tickets to the French capital this summer.
