Gatwick Airport ‘returning to normal’ after days of disruption due to fog

Gatwick Airport ‘returning to normal’ after days of disruption due to fog

Gatwick Airport says it is finally ‘returning to normal’ after four days of cancellations and delays caused by fog.

The disruption started on Friday, when fog fell on much of the UK and lingered through the weekend affecting several airports, including Heathrow.

However, while visibility had improved by this morning, Gatwick Airport said more than 20 flights were cancelled in advance as a precaution and several were delayed.

A Gatwick spokesperson said today: ‘Temporary air traffic restrictions in place over the weekend due to fog have been lifted.

‘A small number of flights have been cancelled in advance to avoid last-minute cancellations, but operations are now returning to normal.

‘London Gatwick apologises for any inconvenience.’

Meanwhile, Air traffic control provider Nats said in a statement: ‘The weather conditions that caused disruption to UK airports over the weekend have significantly improved.

‘Only a few air traffic regulations remain, and these are within normal operating limits.

‘Passengers should still check the status of their flight with their airline, as there may be knock-on impacts to the usual flying schedule.’

Heathrow said it was running a normal service on Monday.

At some points over the weekend, pilots were unable to see anything beyond about 200 metres in front of them, according to FlightRadar24. .

Passengers waiting for flights at Gatwick frustrated at lack of communication

With fog causing disruption for the fourth day in a row at Gatwick Airport, passengers are growing increasingly frustrated.

Several have posted on X, angry at the lack of communication from airlines.

One person wrote: ‘@vueling a whole day waisted at Gatwickairport today as our flight was delayed and we were told to queue for information that took over 5 hours. No communication while queuing only to be told the flight had left once we reached the front of the queue. 1000’s of passengers left.’

Another posted: ‘@easyJet after being told no easyjet flights would take off from Gatwick last night and being left to somehow find accommodation and transport with no other help than being told to “go that way to leave the airport” and an app that crashed…I saw loads of planes were taking off.’

A third said: ‘ANOTHER cancelled flight @IOMAirport @Gatwick_Airport @easyJet so we’re here another day. Fantastic. Brilliant. Thanks for the literal non existent help and crashing apps. We appreciate it.’

‘Severe delays’, closures and reduced services on London Overground lines

Gatwick hit by ‘significant’ but decreasing delays

Gatwick hasn’t been able to catch a break these last few days.

The airport was smothered in fog yesterday, leading to delays, cancellations and air traffic restrictions.

While the weather has cleared up, Gatwick’s travel woes are continuing this morning, according to the airport’s departure boards. More than a dozen flights have been disrupted.

Some flights have been delayed by more than an hour, such as the 5.55am to Geneva, which will now take off at 10.40am.

But the hold-ups, while ‘significant’, are ‘decreasing’ now, monitoring service FlightStatus shows.

What should I do if my flight has been delayed?

As a first step, passengers should contact their airlines for the latest information and check your airline’s flight tracker.

There are limits to when passengers of delayed flights are entitled to assistance.

Here is a breakdown of how much a flight must be delayed before you’re entitled to assistance.

  • For flights under 932 miles (1,500km), such as from Glasgow to Amsterdam, the length of time is at least two hours
  • For flights ranging from 932 miles (1,500km) to 2,175 miles (3,500km) – such as from Manchester to Marrakesh – the time limit is at least three hours delay
  • For long-haul flights of more than 2,175 miles (3,500km) – such as Heathrow to New York – the delay has to be at least four hours before your right to assistance kicks in

Assistance typically includes some food and drink, often provided as a voucher, a means for you to communicate, and accommodation and transfers if an overnight stay is required.
