The Indian men’s hockey team beat Australia 3-2 at the Paris Olympics on Friday (August 2) in what was a milestone win. It was the first time India had beaten Australia since 1972 at an Olympic Games.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh scored a brace as India registered the famous win over Tokyo Games silver medallist Australia in their final pool match.

With the quarterfinalists from both groups already decided, the last set of games were crucial in deciding the final standings and lineup for the quarterfinals.

India finished second, behind Belgium (13 points), in Pool B with 10 points. Australia and Argentina (9 points) rounded off the four quarterfinalists from Pool B.

Germany (12 points), Netherlands (10 points), Great Britain (8 points) and Spain (7 points) make up the other four quarterfinalists from Pool A.

As a result, India will take on Great Britain in the quarter-final – a repeat of the Tokyo 2020 last-eight clash where Manpreet Singh-led side won 3-1.

Germany face Argentina in Paris 2024, Netherlands take on Australia and Belgium take on Spain. Incidentally, this is the exact same lineup from Tokyo 2020.

The order could have been different after Great Britain lost 1-2 to Germany in a closely contested affair.

”There will be no margin for error from now onwards. We try to win great matches in every major tournament and trying to keep the great legacy of Indian hockey going.

”There is never a perfect match. Some or other thing remains. Like if you talk about today’s match, possession is one area where we can do well,” said Harmanpreet.
