The family of Olympic swimmer James Guy are preparing to celebrate his gold medal win with his favourite dish – roast dinner and apple crumble.

The Bury-born athlete was part of Team GB’s 4x200m freestyle relay line-up as they won in commanding fashion to secure Great Britain’s first swimming gold in Paris.

The 28-year-old joined Matt Richards, Tom Dean and Duncan Scott once again following their gold medal win in Tokyo, in 2021.

Following Tuesday’s feat, Guy’s mother Catherine told the BBC: “I’m going to make him the Sunday roast he likes best, with beef and Yorkshire pudding.”

She continued: “It was an amazing feeling. I’m so proud. I can’t believe that was my little boy, and I loved every minute.

“I’ll give him a big hug and make him his Sunday roast and apple crumble.

“Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding will be waiting for him.”

Luke Guy, brother of James Guy, speaking to the BBC

Luke Guy said his brother was “an absolute legend”

Paris is Guy’s third Olympic games, with Tuesday’s gold his second first-place finish, and third medal in total.

His brother Luke said: “It doesn’t get much better than this. I’m probably the proudest person on the planet right now.

“He’s an absolute legend, a credit to British Swimming, and he’s my hero.

“It’s been a dream to watch him win three medals. Going to Rio 2016 was the goal, getting to Tokyo was a dream, but to do it three times – it doesn’t get much better than that.”

His father Andrew said: “When it’s your own son it’s a surreal feeling.

“To become a triple Olympic champion is fantastic, so I think he will carry on now, definitely.”

His mother added: “It’s taken a lot of dedication for all the family. We all did our bit.

“But when James got older he took over, and he’s got the determination and the willpower to carry on and do what he does best.”
