Kate Garraway breaks silence on new role away from Good Morning Britain

Kate Garraway has spoken out about a new “fun” role she has taken on away from the Good Morning Britain iconic sofa. The ITV host has secured herself a small acting role as she made a cameo in ITV’s new drama Douglas Is Cancelled.

The new TV programme is a four-part series, available on ITVX, starring Hugh Bonneville, Karen Gillan and Alex Kingston. It follows Douglas Bellowes (Bonneville), who is a widely respected middle news anchor with co-anchor Madeline (Gillan) and newspaper editor wife Sheila (Kingston).

The series looks at cancel culture, with Douglas’ career left hanging in the balance after he made an ill-advised joke at a wedding. In one episode, Kate appears in a cameo, playing herself, as she interviews Bonneville and Gillan – as their alter egos Douglas and Madeline – about their programme, Live At Six, when they go on Good Morning Britain.

Speaking about playing the role, Kate appeared in a behind-the-scenes clip at the GMB studio as she said: “I’ve just been interviewing Hugh and Karen – Douglas and Madeline – as a little cameo role as the first interviewer and it was really good fun! They were really good. It’s so convincing.

“I now won’t believe them wherever I interview them ever again because they were so convincing as Douglas and Madeline. It was great fun!”

GMB captioned the video, which was posted to Instagram: “The hilarious behind-the-scenes moment from @itv’s new drama Douglas Is Cancelled. @bonhughbon made a surprise appearance whilst @kategarraway spoke about her very own cameo appearance in the drama. Tune into Douglas is Cancelled tonight at 9pm on ITV1 and ITVX.”

Fans were delighted by the news and promised that they would be tuning in to watch. One Instagram user said: “Loved the first episode. Absolutely brilliant.”

Another added: “Definitely tuning in”, followed by a thumbs-up emoji. A third wrote: “I love your appearance top notch prattling about. It looks like you’re having fun.”

It isn’t the first time Kate has appeared in other TV shows, playing herself. She also appeared in a scene for the movie Sharknado 5: Global Swarming in 2017.

The film showed her presenting Good Morning Britain as she warned viewers about an incoming “Sharknado” – a tornado that had picked up sharks.

In choatic scenes, a shark crashed into the studio during the live broadcast and she was crushed and killed, along with her fellow presenters Laura Tobin and Charlotte Hawkins.
