Major UK motorway shut as fire ravages lorry and queues stretch 8 miles

Traffic on a busy motorway has been halted after a lorry burst into flames. Horror pictures from the M6 near Coventry in the West Midlands show a lorry’s trailer engulfed as a raging inferno destroys the HGV.

National Highways says the northbound road near junction 2 is blocked and drivers are at a standstill with delays currently reaching one hour.

Currently, it is predicted traffic will resume at around 6.15pm but this could be amended at any point.

Live traffic cameras show queues backing up to eight miles, but with rush hour just starting this could lengthen. A statement from National Highways says: “M6 northbound within J2 (M69, A46, Coventry) Warwickshire – our officers are en-route. Delays rapidly building in both directions.”
