Olympic gymnastics 2024: Live updates and results as Simone Biles leads USA to gold

Simone Biles makes history as first woman to land Yurchenko double-pike at the Olympics

Day four of the Paris 2024 Olympics is underway as Simone Biles leads the US women’s gymnastics team to a gold medal win this afternoon.

This year’s competition comes after the team scored all silver at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Biles competed in the all-around, vault, floor and beam, while team member Suni Lee fought for the win in the all-around, beam and bars.

This marks the fourth gold medal the team has won in the last 32 years. Biles is now the most decorated American Olympic gymnast with eight medals. This accomplishment follows her emotional decision to withdraw from the Tokyo team event three years ago after developing the “twisties,” which left her unable to complete the twists needed for her routine.

The US women’s team clinched gold after US men’s gymnastics team won their first medal since 2008 on Monday. Their victory came after a stunning pommel horse routine from specialist Stephen Nedoroscik.

Katie Ledecky also competed in the 1,500-meter freestyle swimming race this afternoon, winning by nearly 18 seconds and advancing to the finals.

Meanwhile, Coco Gauff is out of the singles competition after she lost to Croatia’s Donna Vekic this morning in the third round.

Andy Murray summons survivor spirit once again to extend Olympics dream

After the yelling and the leaping, the hugging and the sheer disbelief, Andy Murray returned to his seat and acted as if he had found a moment of silence amid the bedlam. Head in his hands, he tried to process the previous minute where his career teetered on the brink and then came roaring back once more. He can’t believe this. Can we? Not a chance.

His Olympics show with Dan Evans goes on and the last dance gets another turn. As thrilling as the last time, as fraught with tension, two more match points saved to extend a career by at least two more days.

Because why not? Murray is making up the rules now. When you’ve already saved five match points and seen the end, you are playing with house money, even if it is potentially the final match of your career.

Simone Biles has redefined her sport — and its vocabulary. A look at the skills bearing her name

It is not enough — it has never been enough — for Simone Biles to do gymnastics.

The 27-year-old American star has been intent almost from the start on pushing the sport in new directions by doing things that have never been done before. That could continue this week when she tries for her eighth Olympic medal in Paris.

Five elements currently bear her name in the Code of Points after she successfully completed them in an international competition: two on vault, two on floor exercise and one on balance beam.

What are the twisties? The condition that threw Simone Biles off at Tokyo Olympics

Biles promises to be the star of the gymnastics in Paris and hopes to avoid the twisties this time. The condition, usually in high-pressure situations such as the Olympics or world championships, involves losing control midair and feeling unable to land the move, creating a high-risk and dangerous situation.

It has been likened to the yips in golf or baseball, where professionals suddenly lose the ability to perform under pressure.

Coco Gauff furiously contests umpire’s decision during Olympic tennis singles defeat

This is the moment Coco Gauff furiously contests an umpire’s decision during her shock defeat to Donna Vekic in the Olympic women’s singles.

Gauff had led 5-2 in the opening set on Tuesday (30 July), but Croatian Vekic fought back and then broke for 4-2 in the second on a contentious point.

The umpire over-ruled a Vekic shot that had been called out and awarded her the point after deciding Gauff, who subsequently missed her shot, had not been affected by the call.

Gauff, who experienced a similar situation at the French Open, complained bitterly to the umpire and supervisor, claiming she was being “cheated”.

A tearful Gauff said: “It always happens to me on this court… I have to advocate for myself every time.”

Nathan Hales keeps cool in Olympics heat to win stunning shooting gold

Nathan Hales kept his head while all around him lost theirs to claim a nerveless Olympic shooting gold. In a sport of movement, action, and split-second timing, Hales was the iceman in searing near 40-degree temperatures in Chateauroux, over 200 miles south of Paris.

Rivals wilted but he stayed mentally and physically strong – smashing the Olympic record in the process as friends and family, including wife Charlotte, a double Olympian, watched silently on before exploding with joy.

Hales’s success was Great Britain’s first Olympic shooting gold in 12 years, after Peter Wilson’s win in the double trap at London 2012, and the first in this discipline since Bob Braithwaite in 1968.

Simone Biles wins Olympic gold with a little help from her friends as USA dominate team final

The all-around team final is a wild circus of a night with flips and spins and falls in all directions, and you need four eyes to watch. But at 8.20pm there was only one routine left to perform, and the room belonged to Simone Biles.

She performed with spring and extraordinary height, the highlight of which was a triple twisting double-back somersault which is hard enough to write, let alone deliver in an Olympic final. The routine contained some flaws on landing but it is a measure of her otherworldly skill that her score of 14.666 was still the best all night by a distance. She sealed gold with a kiss and the Bercy Arena erupted.

Team GB’s dream team strike fabulous relay gold at Paris Olympics

Team GB finally have a moment and a gold in the pool. It’s back-to-back Olympic titles for the dream team and this wonderful quarter can savour another dominant 4x200m freestyle victory. They led after each leg, defying any lingering doubts from so many close calls in individual events in Paris so far.

The ever-dependable James Guy did his job, Tom Dean followed and Matthew Richards brushed off a any disappointment from the 100m freestyle earlier in the evening. Then Duncan Scott, who has a seventh Olympic medal, did what he does best. He would not be denied, coming home in 6mins 59.43secs.

Stronger together, they had too much for the United States, who took silver, and Australia, who settled for bronze in an engrossing relay at La Defense Arena.
