Paralympics 2024: Cyclist Katie-George Dunlevy wins Ireland’s Paris gold

Cyclist Katie-George Dunlevy clinched Ireland’s first gold medal of the Paris Paralympic Games.

Dunlevy, 42, earned a third successive gold in the women’s B time trial as she and pilot Linda Kelly finished one minute and 23.6 secs ahead of Great Britain’s Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl.

English-born Dunlevy, who competed in Para Rowing for Great Britain before switching international allegiance to Ireland, was securing her fourth Paralympics gold for Ireland as she brought up her career medal haul to seven.

Dunlevy’s triumph on Wednesday avenged being pipped for gold in Sunday’s individual pursuit when she and Eve McCrystal had to be content with silver behind Great Britain’s Unwin and Holl.

McCrystal piloted Dunlevy to all her three previous Paralympic gold medals but opted to concentrate on the track events during the Paris Games cycle as Kelly, 30, took the roads role.

Great Britain duo Unwin and Holl led by 11 seconds just before the six-kilometre mark but the Irish pair powered into 51-second leg on leg two before increasing their advantage over second half of the event.

Dunlevy’s triumph brings Ireland’s medals haul up to five with the country having also secured two silver and two bronze so far in Paris.
