The M25 is closed in both directions as terrifying images show a massive HGV fire that has erupted into a fireball and sparked a major emergency services response.
A massive emergency response from Kent Fire and Rescue Service, London Fire Brigade, and Surrey Fire and Rescue Service is seing dozens of firefighters battle the blaze as flames and smoke fill the night sky at Clacket Lane services.
It broke out just after 10pm tonight and has led to the closure of the London-bound carriageway as the 18-wheeler is decimated by flames. It has also closed the M26 westbound.
A spokesperson for Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said: “The lorry was well alight upon arrival, and crews are using various firefighting methods in an attempt to extinguish the fire.”
Both sides of the M25 remain shut and the road is likely to remain closed for quite some time.
National Highways said: “The M25 in Surrey/ Kent is closed in both directions between J5 near Sevenoaks and J6 near Godstone /Caterham due to a serious heavy goods vehicle fire. This has also closed the M26 westbound between J2A near Wrotham Heath and M25/A21.
“Emergency services including Surrey Police and Surrey Fire & Rescue are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene assisting with traffic management.
“Road users travelling clockwise are advised to follow the Hollow Triangle diversion symbol on road signs.
If this incident impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey.”
The closures a extending as far back as the M26. Drivers are being advised to avoid the area and follow the designated diversions, or seek alternative routes.
It is reported the truck overturned after hitting debris on the carriageway but the driver is safe. Long delays are expected in both directions.
