Top 10 greatest British authors ranked – Charles Dickens is not No.1

Britain has produced an incredible number of well-regarded writers – and this list is only some of the best.

With famous works such as the Harry Potter series, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Romeo and Juliet, 1984 and many others – the UK has been at the forefront of great literature.

I have a degree in Literature and have compiled my list of some of Britain’s best writers of all time.

10. Arthur Conan Doyle

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Doyle is known for creating famous fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.

He trained as a doctor, gaining his degree from Edinburgh University in 1881.

Readers took to Doyle’s detective stories and the series was very popular but Doyle wanted to work on more serious writing so he killed the character off. A public outcry meant he later resurrected the character.

J.K. Rowling is known for being the creator of Harry Potter.

She was born in 1965 at Yate General Hospital near Bristol, and grew up in Gloucestershire in England and in Chepstow, Gwent, in south-east Wales.

The famous author reportedly came up with the idea of Harry Potter in 1990 while sitting on a delayed train from Manchester to London King’s Cross.
