Wales’ Stevie Williams won a second consecutive Tour of Britain stage after a burst for the line in Barnsley.

Thursday’s stage three was a 166.1km hilly route starting in Sheffield, taking in the edge of the Peak District, Rotherham and Doncaster.

The Israel–Premier Tech rider, 28, narrowly beat a host of rivals on a sprint for the line, with Paul Magnier finishing second.

Williams has extended his general classification lead after his back-to-back wins.

He is 16 seconds clear of 21-year-old Scot Oscar Onley, of Team dsm–firmenich PostNL, in second.

Scotissh rider Callum Thornley leads the way in the race for ‘King of the Mountains’ on 50 points – the Trinity Racing rider more than twice that of his nearest rival, team-mate Dean Harvey from Ireland.

The UK’s biggest cycling race consists of six stages ending in Felixstowe, Suffolk, on Sunday.
